ChatGPT Got Something Wrong About Me: What Should I Do?

A source-first checklist for inaccurate ChatGPT claims: save the answer, verify citations, distinguish feedback from personal-data requests, and follow up without assuming a guaranteed fix.

If ChatGPT says something false about you, save the exact answer, check any cited sources, and document the correct fact before deciding what to report. An inaccurate answer, an inaccurate web page, and a personal-data concern are different problems. Correcting ChatGPT inside one conversation does not establish that future answers have been fixed.

Do not treat an AI-generated claim as proof. An answer can confuse people with similar names, repeat incomplete source material, or generate an unsupported statement. The goal is to identify what you can substantiate and choose the process that fits.

Step 1: save a record of the claim

  1. Copy the exact prompt, the answer, and the date. Note the model or mode if available and whether web search was used.
  2. Save a private screenshot or conversation record. Do not publish sensitive personal details just to demonstrate the problem.
  3. Identify the specific sentence that is wrong. Separate factual mistakes from tone, opinion, and accurate information you find unfavorable.
  4. List any cited URLs and check the cited pages themselves. A citation may not support the disputed claim.
  5. Record the correct fact and evidence from an appropriate authoritative source.

A useful claim log can be one sentence per field: “Prompt / Date / Incorrect statement / Cited URL / Correct fact / Evidence / Action.” It makes a report much clearer than “ChatGPT is wrong about me.”

Step 2: check which problem you actually have

For a fictional example, suppose John Doe is described as working at a firm he left years ago. If a cited biography still lists the old employer, that is a source update to pursue. If the biography is current but the answer names the old employer, document the mismatch. If the cited page belongs to another John Doe, document the identity confusion.

An answer without citations does not prove that there is one web page causing it. Not all ChatGPT answers use live search. Avoid chasing an assumed source or promising that one new biography will change every answer.

Step 3: correct a source you control

Update an inaccurate website biography or professional profile you own. Keep your current role, organization, and identity details consistent where appropriate. Do not add unverified achievements, fake endorsements, or unnecessary private information to make the page appear more authoritative.

If a third-party source is incorrect, use its published correction process and provide a precise, supported request. Reporting ChatGPT's answer does not change the publisher's page, and changing the page does not guarantee an immediate change in ChatGPT.

Step 4: distinguish answer feedback from a personal-data request

Use the feedback or reporting controls available on the answer to explain the factual error. Interface options can change; follow the current instructions rather than assuming every account has identical controls. Give enough detail to show the discrepancy without exposing unrelated private information.

OpenAI also describes a separate personal-data request process. Under some privacy laws, you may request that certain personal information stop appearing in ChatGPT responses when it is inaccurate, excessive, irrelevant, or no longer appropriate. Its Privacy Portal offers “Remove my personal data from ChatGPT responses”; requests are reviewed case by case, including privacy and public-interest considerations. This is not a universal guarantee that every unwanted answer will disappear.

Read OpenAI's personal-data guidance before submitting a request. Use the current official route and provide only the information needed for the applicable process. For a legal dispute or serious sensitive claim, consider qualified advice.

Step 5: verify rather than assume

Keep your report and any response. Later, repeat a comparable factual query and record what you see. An improved answer in one test is useful evidence for that test, not proof that all users, models, and prompts now receive the same correction.

Track the status of the source page separately. You may have a confirmed publisher correction while the AI answer is still inconsistent—or an improved answer while the original page remains unchanged.

What not to do

  • Do not rely on the assistant saying “I will remember that” as a global correction.
  • Do not create repetitive pages that amplify the false claim.
  • Do not upload confidential case files or identity documents into a public conversation.
  • Do not assume all unfavorable information is false or eligible for a privacy request.
  • Do not pay for a promise of a guaranteed future ChatGPT answer.

How this fits a broader reputation plan

Checking an AI claim is one task; building an accurate online identity is ongoing work. Mirror.fyi prepares reputation analysis, a personalized action plan, and content you review and publish yourself. You remain responsible for external requests and factual accuracy. Nothing is posted or submitted on your behalf.

Read why AI may repeat a false claim for the underlying causes, or AI reputation management for individuals for the broader workflow. If the same issue appears in another assistant, use the Perplexity source-checking guide rather than assuming one report reaches both platforms.
